잘 사는 것과 부자가 되는 것은 다른 것입니다. 잘 사는 것은 '사이'가 좋다는 것입니다. 그 '사이'는 언어와 문화가 서로 통할 때 이어집니다. 한국에서 잘 나가던 사람도, 똑똑하다고 칭찬듣던 사람도 낯선 이국의 땅에서는 상처받고 작아지곤 합니다. 최고였던 내가, 체면으로 살던 내가 아무것도 아니란 걸 알게 되기도 합니다. 공주처럼 자란 제 딸이 동생들이 생기자 돌연 아버지인 제 가슴을 먹먹하게 하더군요. 따뜻하게 안아주길 바라는 그 얼굴을 보자 저도 그렇게 저를 보았을 어머니가 떠올랐습니다. 제가 제 딸을 보며 알게 된 것, 이국의 땅 뉴욕에서 살아가는 여러분이 알고 있는 것, '지금'이 힘든 모든 이들이 알게 될 것. 내가 아무것도 아니라는 생각이 들 때에도 결코 잊지 말아야 할 바로 그것. 그 한 마디에 대해 여러분과 이야기 하려 합니다.

Living wealthy is one thing, and living nice is another. You can live nice by getting along with others through good communication. Language and culture are, of course, integral parts of this communication. Even if you were extraordinary and well-recognized back in Korea, chances are you are nobody here in New York. You were once a person driven by ego, but now you find it unnecessary. I had my heart broken when I saw my little daughter snuggling up to me following the birth of her brothers. Her face was telling me to give her more love and hugs. Then, it got me thinking that my mom might have felt the same with me before. And here I am to share with you what I learned from my daughter and what you might have experienced already while desperately adapting to this foreign place. This message is something that you will eventually learn in times of hardship, and we all have to bear it in mind when we find ourselves feeling insignificant.

幸せに暮らすことと裕福になることは違います。幸せに暮らすことは「人間関係」がいいという意味です。「人間関係」は言葉と文化がお互いに通じている時に続きます。韓国で成功を収めた人も聡明だと称賛された人も異国の地では心が傷ついて委縮してしまいます。最高だった私が,プライドで生きていた私が何でもない存在だと知ることでもあります。お姫様のように育てられた娘は弟が生まれると突然父親である私に依存するようになりました。暖かい心で抱いてくれることを望んでいる表情を見てそのように私を見ていた母を思い出しました。娘を見たり異国の地ニューヨークに住んでいる皆さんを見ていて知ったことは,「今」辛いと知っていることは,私は何でもない存在だと思う時にも決して忘れてはならないことです。その一言について話したいと思います。
